Capsule hostels are no longer exclusively Japanese. You can find them in the British Isles as well. One can find similar accommodation in far east cities such as Edinburgh and Dublin at CoDE Hostel, a European Pod hostel chain operating in both cities. More than just a conventional hostel, CoDE Hostel offers a choice of their signature ‘PoD’ beds for single travellers and penthouse apartments or private rooms for group travellers.
During a recent trip to Edinburgh, we decided to give CoDE Hostel – The Loft a try. They must have been very popular amongst travellers as the PoD we snagged was the last available one in the female dorm that aligned with our travel dates.
Located on Rose Street which runs parallel to Princess Street and a short 10- to 15-minute walk from Waverly Bridge Railway Station, the boutique hostel can easily be located using Google Maps. The check-in process was simple. The friendly staff provided a brief tour and very helpful instructions on accessing the hostel and dorm rooms using coded locks. Each guest is given an individual code that can only be used for the duration of the stay for security purposes, which is a plus point.
The spacious PoD bed offer abundant head room and decent privacy. Each PoD comes with headboard, multiple plug points, USB port, towel rack and a mini shelves. Individual lockers are also provided inside the dorms for smaller luggage and personal items. The bathroom and toilet were very clean – the sinks with windows facing a pretty cobbled street were particularly charming.
Breakfast is provided every morning for all guests. Unfortunately, a schedule packed with early morning activities prevented us from tucking into the sumptuous waffles, cereal, fruits and toast.
The best part about the hostel is its location. It is just a ten-minute walk at most from all the main sights in Edinburgh such as Scott Monument, the Scottish National Gallery and Princess Street. There are also plenty of nearby shops such as Primark. If you are looking for a clean, convenient and friendly environment to spend a few nights in, CoDE Hostel is certainly worth considering if you do not mind paying slightly above-average prices by hostel standards.
